스테이크를 덜 익혀 먹으면 난폭운전을 유발할 수 있다는 연구결과가 나왔다.

육류를 덜 익혀 먹으면 ‘톡소플라즈마(Toxoplasma Gondii)’라는 기생충이

뇌로 침투해 톡소플라즈마증에 감염될 수 있다는 것이다. 이 경우 충동적인

행동을 저지를 확률이 높아지고, 난폭운전으로 이어질 수 있다는 주장이다. 

　

톡소플라즈마증은 소고기·양고기 등 붉은 고기를 덜 익혀먹거나 고양이 등과

접촉했을 때 걸리기 쉽다. 대부분의 경우, 기생충과 접촉 후 몇 주 동안만

감염성을 갖고 일부 가벼운 독감 증상만 있어 감염을 알아채기 힘들다.

그래서 대부분 사람들은 감염된 지도 모른 채 지나가게 되고,

톡소플라즈마증은 휴면단계 또는 잠복단계로 넘어가게 된다.

물론 휴면단계에서는 보통 몸에 해롭지 않다고 그동안 알려졌으나

최근 이 단계에서 뇌의 화학물질 변화로 인해 사람들의 행동패턴이

바뀔 수 있다는 연구결과가 잇따라 나오고 있다.

미국 시카고 대학 연구팀이 최근 358명의 휴면단계 톡소플라즈마증 환자를

관찰한 결과, 화를 좀처럼 참지 못하고 폭발하거나 충동을 제어하지

 못하는 경향을 나타냈다. 연구팀을 이끈 에밀 코카로 교수는 “톡소플라즈마증 환자가

난폭운전 등을 할 확률이 정상인보다 두 배 높은 것으로 나타났다”며

“톡소플라즈마 기생충이 두뇌의 화학물질 분비에 변화를 일으키고

공격적인 성향의 위험을 높인다”고 주장했다.

이에 영국 런던대학교 기생충학교실 조안 웹스터 학장도 톡소플라즈마

기생충의 잠복감염이 두뇌의 도파민 수치를 변화시켜 여러 가지

정신병적 증상(환각·환청·환시)들을 일으킨다고 주장한 바 있다.

웹스터 박사는 “기생충은 장에서 혈류를 통해 뇌로 이동해서

우리 신체의 면역시스템을 피해 숨어 있게 된다”며 “이때, 증상이 없는 것처럼

보이지만, 인지 능력 등에 변화를 주는 형태로 인체에

 영향을 미치는 것으로 보고 있다”고 말했다.

톡소플라즈마증이 우울증이나 자살과 일부 관련이

있을 것이라는 주장은 예전에도 제기됐다.

2012년 미국 매릴랜드 대학 연구팀이 스웨덴 룬드시의 80명

이상을 대상으로 연구한 결과, 톡소플라즈마증 환자는 일반인에 비해

자살확률이 7배가 되는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 1959년 미들스브로의

성루크병원이 의학전문지 란셋에 보고한 연구에 따르면,

잉글랜드 크로이든 경찰이 주택가에 건축 폐기물을 버리고 도망친

운전자 신원 파악에 나섰으나 아무런 단서를 잡지 못하고 있다.

 아들과 딸이 아버지 1주기 추모 행사를 놓고 설전을 벌였다.

딸 리웨이링(李瑋玲·61)은 10일(현지 시각) "(대대적인 추모 행사는) 개인을

우상화하는 것으로, 리콴유 '왕조(王朝)'를 건설하려는 시도"라고 했다.

그는 이 같은 내용의 기고문을 현지 언론에 싣고자 했다.

 기고를 받아주는 언론이 없자, 그는 기자들에게 이메일을 보내면서까지

자기 주장을 알렸다. 현 총리인 아들 리셴룽(李顯龍·64)은

"국민들이 진심으로 추모의 뜻을 표현한 것"이라 맞섰다.

월스트리트저널(WSJ)은 "이례적인 '왕족' 간 내분을 계기로

'왕조 정치' 논란이 불붙고 있다"고 11일 보도했다.

　

 

　

리콴유 1주기인 지난달 23일을 전후로 싱가포르 전역에서는

100여개 추모 행사가 열렸고, 45만명이 리콴유 묘를 참배했다.

 리콴유 부부 모습의 밀랍 인형, 지우개 4877개로 리콴유의 얼굴을

형상화한 대형 지우개 퍼즐 등이 설치됐다. 리웨이링은

 "이 같은 추모 열기는 중국 독재자 마오쩌둥(毛澤東) 우상화를 떠올리게 한다"며

"아버지가 살아 계셨다면 이를 반대했을 것"이라 했다.

실제 리콴유는 생전에 "내가 죽거든 내 집을 기념관 같은

국가 성역으로 만들지 말고 헐어버리라"고 말하는 등 자신에 대한

 대규모 추모 행사나 우상화를 경계한 것으로 알려졌다.

리웨이링은 오빠인 리 총리가 "아버지 인기를 이용하기 위해 인위적으로

추모 열기를 부풀렸다"고 주장했다. 의회 등 공공장소를 개방해

추모 행사를 열게 하고, 정부 지원을 받는 풀뿌리 단체들을 동원했다는 것이다.

 리웨이링은 "이 같은 권력 남용은 왕조를 만들려는 의도가 아니면

 있을 수 없는 일"이라며 "리 총리는 (리콴유의) 수치스러운 아들"이라 했다.

리 총리는 '왕조 건설' 논란에 "나는 왕조를 건설하려는 의도가 전혀 없고,

설령 그렇게 하려고 해도 싱가포르 국민이 받아들이지 않을 것"이라 했다.

그러나 리콴유 가족들이 정·재계 요직에 많이 앉아 있기 때문에

 '왕조 건설' 논란은 쉽게 가라앉지 않을 것이라고 외신들은 전했다.

리 총리는 리콴유의 장남으로 지난 2004년부터 총리다.

　

리콴유 집권기(1965~1990)까지 합치면 40년 부자(父子) 통치인 셈이다.

또 차남 리셴양(李顯陽)이 동남아 최대 공항인 창이공항을 운영하는

공기업 싱가포르민간항공국(CAAS) 이사회 의장이고, 맏며느리 호칭(何晶)은

최대 국부펀드 테마섹홀딩스의 최고경영자(CEO)다. 딸 리웨이링도

국립뇌신경의학원장이긴 하지만 아들과 며느리에 비해 권력 중심부는 아니다.

싱가포르 정치 전문가인 마이클 바 호주 플린더스대 교수는 WSJ에

 "리콴유 가문(家門)과 싱가포르는 분리하기 어려울 정도"라고 했다.

총리 남매의 공개 설전은 리콴유의 정치·경제적 유산에 대한 재평가

논쟁으로도 번지고 있다고 영국 BBC는 분석했다.

 리콴유는 싱가포르 발전 방안으로 경제적으로 금융 개방·수출 주도형을 택했으나,

정치적으로는 '권위주의'를 택했다. 민주주의 형식이지만

정부를 비판하면 처벌이 뒤따랐다. 작년 국경 없는 기자회(RSF)의

세계 언론 자유도 순위에서 싱가포르는 153위로 최하위권이었다.

야권은 여태껏 한 번도 집권하지 못했다.

그러나 2011년 총선에서 집권당인 인민행동당이 역대 최저

득표율인 60.1%를 기록하는 등 인기가 떨어지는 추세다. 집권당은

 1980년까지 야권에 의석을 하나도 내주지 않았다. 가장 최근인

2015년 총선에서는 득표율 69.9%로 일부 만회했다.

그러나 이코노미스트지(誌) [removed][removed]는 "선거 직전 리콴유가 숨져

추모 분위기가 일지 않았다면, 사상 최초로 전 지역구에 후보를 낸

 야권이 역대 최다 득표를 할 수도 있었다"고 분석했다.

싱가포르가 최근 중국 경기 둔화 등의 여파로 저성장에 빠진 것도 큰 과제다.

 BBC는 "리콴유 집권기 고성장을 경험하지 않은 젊은 세대를
